The Barber County Heritage Center
Exhibition Hall

UPDATE - 7-4-2010

“Wheat People: Celebrating Kansas Harvest”

Opening July 17, 2010 at The Barber County Heritage Center, is the traveling exhibit

“Wheat People: Celebrating Kansas Harvest”

Kansas is known by the nicknames “Wheat State” and “Breadbasket.” Throughout much of the 20th century,

this single state has produced more wheat than most countries.

It is a matter of great pride to farmers in the state that claims to “feed the world.”

“Wheat People: Celebrating Kansas Harvest” takes a look at why harvest is so important to our state. Far more

than just economic survival for Kansas farmers, it is a part of our past and our tradition.

From the golden age of threshing to computerized combines, harvest time

holds a wealth of memories for many Kansans.

This exhibit also explores how changes in technology have influenced Kansas farm families.

Advances in field equipment to how meals are prepared and served are featured. Other aspects,

such as nature, storage and after-harvest festivals are also examined within the exhibit.

This exhibit was produced by the Kansas State Historical Society and is part of the

Kansas Interpretive Traveling Exhibit Service. (KITES)

---------------------------------------------------------
Our Exhibition Hall facility is currently in it's developmental stage.

When completed, it will house an historic representation
from each of the eight incorporated cities in Barber County,
as well as general historical information and memorabilia
from all over Barber County.

The hall will also include an exhibit featuring
famous Barber County citizens, including
Jibo Hewitt, B.H. Borne, O.S. Cummins, Carrie A. Nation and many others.

Plans also include: An exhibit representing the various
rural and 1 room schools from Barber County's past; Exhibits representing
the various industries that helped Barber County
grow and prosper, including Oilfield, Agriculture and Mining; and several more

We also plan to host a variety of traveling exhibits and other
displays of interest to those visiting the South Central Kansas region.

One of the most prized museum attractions is our extensive video library
of Barber County Pioneers.
In recorded video interviews, Barber County citizens,
tell their very personal stories of life in this part of Kansas
over the past 100 years.
These interviews provide a wealth of accurate,
first-hand historical information about our community and how it has
grown and changed over the generations.
Many of these Pioneers are no longer with us, making these recorded
personal histories even more valuable.

Our primary goal at The Heritage Center Exhibition Hall
is to preserve and share our Barber County history
in an interesting and informative way.
